Towards Beatification

"It took a whole century to the Church of France to take a real interest in the martyrs of the French Revolution "

Investigation process (1907-1908) : The bishop of Aire, Reverend Touzet appointed an ecclesiastical commission of inquiry , thus initiating the ordinary process. In 1909, the Roman authorities required another investigation at the diocese level it was a non cultu process to ascertain that the Sister had not been worshipped publicly since she had been guillotined, which would have been fatal to her beatification cause. At that stage it was the Holy See who had to make the decision, but in 1916, the cause had not yet been submitted to Rome,  though the rule of a 10 year time period required between the investigation phase and the formal introduction of the cause had been waived.
On the 24th of January 1917,  however, Benedict XV signed formally the "introduction of the cause of Marguerite Rutan, Servant of God", but again,  Rome required a second non cultu process and it was  only in 1918, on the 11th of December, that the Sacred Congregation of Rites certified that"Marguerite Rutan had not been the object of a cult  " After the signature of the decree, nothing seemed to  happen in Rome on the process until the year 1999.

1999, The process is resumed : A few years before that, in 1994, Reverend Sarrabère celebrated a solemn mass in the cathedral of Dax in memory of sister Rutan to commemorate the 200th anniversary of her execution. He also commended Abbey Devert with a historical research on Marguerite Rutan, and also on the other victims in the Landes area, more precisely in the former dioceses of Dax and Aire. In 1999,  he appointed a historical commission and in 2000, he convened a diocese court. Abbey Lartigue was the promotor of the Faith and Abbey Devert  the cause postulator. An enormous research  work was sent to Rome, to the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints.
And finally,  on the 1st of July 2010, Pope Benedict XVI approved officially the declaration of Marguerite Rutan’s martyrdom.
